Swimmers finish 2nd in OAA tournament

It was quite the Oakland Activities Association tournament for the varsity swim and dive team.
The Wildcats finished second with a total of 442.5 points, 1.5 points behind Bloomfield Hills Andover. According to varsity head coach Jackie Rank, Oxford would wind up sharing the Blue division title with Andover since Oxford beat Andover in the regular season and Andover beat the Wildcats in the tournament.
Rank said the following athletes were also named to the All-League team: junior Jarred Butler (200 Freestyle, 200 free relay, 400 free relay); senior Matthew and sophomore Marco Campagiorni in diving; Joey Tasch (100 freestyle, 200 free relay, 400 free relay); freshmen Cheyne Stresky (500 freestyle); sophomore Erick Vandecar (200 free relay and 400 free relay); sophomore Blake Hibdon (200 free relay, 100 backstroke, 400 free relay).
In addition to the athletes? success, Rank was also named the Coach of the Year for the Blue division by her coaching peers.
‘We had a great year and I am so proud of the boys,? Rank said. ‘I hope that they will remember this feeling next year so we can take the title outright.?
Individual results were:
200 Medley Relay: Oxford’s A relay of Stresky, senior Dwight Merrill, freshmen Chad Scribner and junior Corey Jones finished fourth with a time of 1:59.07.
200 Freestyle: Butler finished first in a school record time of 1:46.40. Stresky finished fourth, sophomore Lewis Marshall was fifth and senior Daniel Stockard and senior Sean Thomas were 10th and 11th respectively.
200 Individual Medley: Vandecar finished second in a school record time of 2:13.33. Scribner finished ninth.
50 Freestyle: Tasch finished third with a time of 23.66, while Hibdon tied for fourth, Jones finished 10th and Merrill and sophomore Doug Butkiewicz was 15th and 16th respectively.
Diving: Matthew Campagiorni finished second with a school record 337.65 points. Marco Campagiorni was third and freshmen Jared Tasch was fourth. Rank noted all three divers qualified for regionals at Fenton on Tuesday, March 6.
100 Butterfly: Vandecar finished fifth in a time of 1:01.58. Sophomore Tim Cook was ninth.
100 Freestyle: Tasch finished first in a time of 51.81. Thomas was ninth while Butkiewicz finished 12th and junior Chris Lavender was 16th.
500 Freestyle: The Wildcats swept the top three spots with Butler finishing first in a time of 4:58.45. Stresky and Marshall were second and third respectively. Senior Daniel Stockard was 11th.
200 Freestyle Relay: Oxford’s A relay of Tasch, Hibdon, Vandecar and Butler finished first with a school record and state qualifying time of 1:34.46.
100 Backstroke: Hibdon finished second with a time of 1:01.29. During prelims on Wednesday, Hibdon set the school record with a time of 1:01.04. Jones finished ninth overall.
100 Breaststroke: Merrill finished 10th with a time of 1:14.86. Scribner finished in 14th and sophomore James Beaupied was 15th.
400 Freestyle Relay: Oxford A Relay of Tasch, Hibdon, Vandecar and Butler finished first with a time of 3:29.48.
The swim season is not over yet as Butler will swim in some individual events for the state finals, as well as be a part of the 200 and 400 free relays with Tasch, Hibdon and Vandecar.
