Steve Hutchins has been growing tomato plants at his home off Maybee Road in Independence Township for 30-40 years, but this year was special.
“I’ve never had one grow this tall – about 12 feet,” Hutchins said.
He planted it during Memorial Day weekend last May and it kept growing all season. And it’s all organic.
“No fertilizer, just ground up leaves and grass,” he said. “All the others are normal, except this one.”
He and his girlfriend Gail Wotton still get tomatoes off the plant and slice them up for their salads.
“They taste delicious,” Wotton said.
