Victory in Flushing

Spikers spent Saturday going undefeated and winning the Flushing Invitational.
They beat Davison in the final game to win the tournament and to also top their sixth team for the day.
“We played really well,” said Clarkston Varsity Volleyball Coach Kelly Avenall. “The team came up with some goal in terms of the overall season what they want to do. Then, they talked about what they need to do along the way.”
It was the focus on their goals helping them drive past not only Davison but Carman-Ainsworth, Waterford Mott and Almont along the way.
Senior captains Brianna Frakes and Katie Chadwell led the way in serving – Frakes had 12 aces and Chadwell had ten for the day.
“We served probably the best we have all year so far,” Avenall added.
Frakes also had 52 assists and Chadwell had 48 kills. Senior Melanie Aguayo had 52 digs for the day.
The Lady Wolves kept their opponents 13 points or more away from them on the scoreboard. Avenall added it gave all the players a chance to see playing time.
“Everybody played,” she said. “Everybody played well. It was a good opportunity to get everybody out there and experience what it is like to play on the varsity level.”
The team was home on Tuesday as they hosted a quad against Macomb Dakota, Birmingham Seaholm and Marian and headed in with a 16-4-1 record.
“Dakota is number one in the state and they have a girl who is just phenomenal,” Avenall said. “We have played them already so we know what they are going to bring. It could be a good night for them if they play well and to their capability they could beat all three teams.”
The girls head to Rochester Adams on Thursday for another quad meet to take on three more teams.
Avenall added Rochester Adams will be tough since they are coached by Marian’s previous coach.
“He will have them in great shape,” she said. “He is a great coach and I know they will give us good competition.”
The strengths going in are the girls are figuring each other out and know their weaknesses and strengths. The meet at Adams begins at 5 p.m.
