Senior running back Evan Montgomery looked back as Troy defensive linemen closed in at the seven yardline in Colts territory.
They brought Montgomery down three yards short after an 87-yard run down the middle of the field. Two plays later senior running back Joey Goss finished the job, sneaking under Troy’s defense to score with 2:51 left in the first half.
One more touchdown in the second half from Mike Schwartz ended the game with a victory for the Wolves, 28-13.
“When Evan came in we had a nice trio in there,” Clarkston Boys Varsity Head Football Coach Kurt Richardson said, adding the combination of Goss and running back Ben Kaminsky kept Troy’s defense on their toes.
“Our running game really tood off tonight,” Richardson noted.
“Tonight was having more than one kid – they can’t focus on Joey, Ben will hurt you on the inside and now we have Evan back to healthy. Evan had a couple of nice, long runs. Goss was phenomenal.”
The win also proved the Wolves’ forfeiting their first two games due to an ineligible player had little effect on them.
“These kids are resilient,” said Richardson. “They were very focused right from the moment they found out through tonight. We just played football. We focused on this game all week long.”
The Wolves scored on their second ball possession in the game after Troy punted the ball to the Wolves’ 42-yard line.
Quarterback Mitch Baenziger made a 52-yard touchdown pass to Goss on Clarkston’s third down with 52.6 seconds to go in the first quarter.
Seven minutes later Baenziger struck aiding in another touchdown, this time his own. He held onto the ball and ran 42-yards down the middle of the field into the endzone, putting the Wolves, 14-0.
He connected a 6-yard touchdown pass to Schwartz with 2:40 left in the third to secure Clarkston’s win.
Alex Barta scored on all of his four point after touchdown attempts.
The Colts scored their 13 points in the final 12 minutes in the game on touchdowns from Justin Losey and Matt Oppenlander.
“It was kind of a strange game,” Richardson noted. “We dominated them and then they came back and dominated us at the end. It went back and forth. Hats off to them, they could have quit when it was 28-0.”
The boys are back in Clarkston this week when they host their Homecoming Game against Pontiac.
“It is going to be nice to be home,” said Richardson. “It is like we are the road warriors. We are always on the road this season.”
The defensive line will be looking at stopping Phoenix running back Kezlow Smith and Jeff Johnson – both scored against Rochester in their 48-16 win on Sept. 16.
The offensive line will keep their eyes on Ronnie Craft-Bush, Chris Hall and Garrett Kirk-Turner as both teams look to improve their 2-2 overall record (1-2 in OAA Red).
Kick off is at 7 p.m.
