Youth recognized for volunteerism

Lake Orion Schools Superintendent Christine Lehman described them as ‘shining stars in Lake Orion.?
‘As they leave Lake Orion and Lake Orion schools, they are leaving them a little better,? she said of the individuals honored in last week’s Orion Area Youth Assistance (OAYA) Youth Recognition Awards.
Over 90 members of Lake Orion youth were honored in the award ceremony where all three judges from 52-3 District Court served as the night’s keynote speakers. Honorable Nancy Carniak spoke on the tenets of characher, Hon. Julie Nicholson spoke about leadership and Hon. Lisa Asadoorian spoke on service.
‘You’re famous,? Judge Asadoorian told the group. ‘You’re famous in your community, you’re famous with the people you have helped.?
‘You plant the trees so that everyone else can enjoy the shade,? she added, thanking the group for their service and help in the community.
Individuals were honored for their involvement in the X-TEND Mentors program, the Orion Township Public Library, Project Shalom, CROP Walk, Summer Mission, World Vision 30-Hour Famine and individual involvement in various other projects in the community, along with courageous and brave acts.
Corbin Eversole, a first grader, was honored for helping save his uncle’s life by calling 911 when he could not wake his uncle up from his ‘nap.?
Jovannah Jones volunteers to help raise money for AIDS and cancer patients, while Katerina Turner volunteers her time to help train Leader Dogs for the Blind and helps with the County Animal Shelter.
‘It’s amazing what each of you has done for the community,? Judge Carniak told the group.
