Our charter, like our master plan, is meant to guide this community. It was thoughtfully crafted by people who genuinely want what’s best for Clarkston. The proposed historic district charter amendment implies protections are currently missing, but do your homework: those protections are already in the state and historic district act and our local ordinance that city council controls HDC spending and chooses its members. Checks and balances are in place. However, this destructive amendment would circumvent the real protections and irreparably damage the historic district. It’s a “head scratcher” why anyone would vote for it. Please vote no.
