Booters beat Brandon, 3-1-1 in FML

With a few key players still nursing injuries and the team’s back-up goal keeper, Steven Walker, in the net, the Oxford varsity boys soccer team still beat league rival, Brandon, 1-0 Monday night.
Senior captain Dan Arft assisted junior Doug Kiracofe with the first shot to the net, ending the half 1-0. Oxford’s defense was strong and didn’t let any serious chances past them.
‘Their passing was excellent and showed a lot of patience,? said coach John Thaler.
On Friday, the boys traveled to Farmington to make-up an earlier canceled game.
Coming off their solid win against Fenton last Wednesday, the team was pumped to take them on. Twenty minutes into the game, the Wildcats? goalie was issued a red card for handling the ball outside the box. Oxford had to play the next 60 minutes with one less player.
Five minutes from the half, senior captain Gethin Angell rocketed a free-kick that almost slid past the goal keeper, but it was caught.
Last Wednesday’s game against Fenton seemed to be the highlight of the Cats? last week of play with their 2-0 win.
Oxford’s defense was strong and kept Fenton’s chances at goal to a minimum.
The score was 0-0 going into the second half, but sophomore Corey Olson pounded a header into the net for his first goal of the season.
Last in the half, Oxford was rewarded with a free-kick from half field. Angell lofted the ball to junior Steven Walker for a shot that ricochet off the goal keeper for a point.
Oxford’s overall record is now 5-5-3 and their Flint Metro League record is 3-1-1. They take on Lapeer East tonight at 6:45 p.m.
