Campground fight ends in assault, battery charges

On June 13, at about 9:30 p.m., a Brandon deputy responded to the Clearwater Campground, 1140 S. Ortonville Road, for an assault and battery. The complainant said he was attending a graduation party there for his ex-girlfriend’s sister that he had been invited to when his ex-girlfriend’s husband threw an ice chest at him, striking him in the head and neck area, causing minor abrasions. The ex-girlfriend’s husband then punched him in the back of his head with a closed fist several times. The complainant protected his head with his hands while he was crouched down, resulting in minor bruising and swelling to his hands. The suspect left the scene prior to the deputy’s arrival. The incident was verified by an impartial witness. When the deputy went to the suspect’s home, the suspect’s wife answered the door and said her husband had gone for a walk to cool his head. She said she didn’t observe the incident, but they’ve been having several issues lately because of her ex-boyfriend being invited to family functions and his presence causing tension.
The suspect returned home and told the deputy the incident happened as the complainant stated, except that just prior, the complainant had walked by him and made a profane sex-related comment about his wife. The husband said it shocked him, he thought about it, then acted as previously described.
He was issued a misdemeanor citation for simple assault and battery.
