The heroic actions of 16-year-old Spencer Cameron where recognized last week.
At the July 19 Addison Township Board meeting, trustees honored Cameron for saving his family after thier house caught on fire on Thursday, April 29.
The award was a certificate of recognition for outstanding bravery and courage for saving his family during a house fire at his home on the morning of April 29, 2010.
‘I just thought that we should recognize somebody,? said Addison Township Fire Chief Jerry Morawski.
‘We do a lot of training and for a 16-year-old to show that kind of courage, understanding and self control, it should be recognized,? he added.
Addison Township firefighters responded to a house fire at 2750 E. Drahner Rd, which destroyed nearly 60 percent of the house.
If it wasn’t for the quick thinking actions of Cameron, his family might have lost more than just their house.
He was able to wake up his family and get them out of the house after he woke up smelling smoke.
‘I don’t remember waking everybody up, but I remember waking up in the middle of my room and yelling for my mom,? he said.
He then proceeded to get out of his room and make his way down the stairs to the door leading outside, which was locked by a deadbolt.
‘I was going to kick the door down, but I thought my dad would yell at me,? he added.
He was able to make his way outside, but then collasped to the ground after looking to see if his family had made it out of the house. He was diagnosed with smoke inhilation as well as suffering some brain damage from all of the carbon dixode and was in Children’s Hospital in Detroit for 10 days.
When asked how he felt about his heroic effort, Cameron stated that he didn’t do it, Jesus did.
‘He (Jesus) woke me up,? Cameron said. ‘It’s a really nice thing, but I wouldn’t have been able to do it if I didn’t have Jesus in my life and I owe him all of the credit.
