X-country teams finish third in OAA Jamboree

The Wildcats cross county teams proved this season that they do belong in the Oakland Activities Association after they finished the season in third place for both the boys and the girls standings.
In the final OAA Jamboree on Thursday, Oct. 21, both teams finished third. North Farmington edged out the girls for second by two points, 65-67, while the boys trailed Farmington for second.
The girls were led by all-league selection sophomore captain Brooke Kovacic, who finished second despite leading for most of the race. She was passed with less than 100 meters to go and suffered her first loss in the OAA. She finished with a time of 19:16.
Other all-league selections include junior Brittany Johnson, who finished in sixth place with a time of 20:09 and junior Chelsea Johnson, who finished 12th with a 20:31.
According to head coach Ray Sutherland, B. Johnson’s time was the seventh fastest in school history.
Other top performers for the girls include sophomore Abby Wrobel in 23rd (21:14) and freshman Alora McCoy in 24th (21:17).
On the boys side, senior captain Dylan Smith was named to the all-league team after he finished second overall, running a time of 16:55. Sophomore Ryan Gillespie was also named to the all-league team. He finished in eighth place with a time of 17:12.
Oxford’s top five was rounded out by senior captain Curtis Kocher (17th place; 17:39), junior Alec Smith (19th; 17:44) and sophomore Ross Chapman (20th; 17:46).
‘All in all, it was a real good performance,? Sutherland said. ‘Typical Oxford, we are running our best time at the end of the season when we should.? Up next for the Cats is regionals, which will be held Oct. 30 at Goodells County Park in St. Clair County.
