Swimmers get 1st league win

On a night when the varsity girls swim team honored its seniors, they picked up their first league win of the season.
Oxford improved to 1-4 in the Oakland Activities Association White division after defeating Farmington 95-88 on Thursday, Oct. 6. During the meet, varsity swim coach Jackie Rank honored her three seniors – Grace Galbraith, Miranda Murphy and Claire Patrell – following the diving portion of the event.
The Wildcats also set three school records in the 100 Butterfly and in the 200 Freestyle Relay and 200 Individual Medley.
Individual meet results are:
200 Medley Relay – Oxford’s A relay of junior Caitlyn Wroblewski, sophomore Elizabeth Wilkins, sophomore Rose FitzCrane and Murphy finished second with a time of 2:16.51.
200 Freestyle – Freshman Taylor Curtis finished first with a time of 2:05.15. Junior Amanda delaPaz finished third and sophomore Melissa Skelton was fourth.
200 Individual Medley – Sophomore Haley Kornburger finished first in a school and pool record time of 2:14.74, which allowed her to qualify for the state meet in the event. Wilkins finished fourth and junior Sammi Kurk was fifth for the Wildcats.
50 Freestyle – Patrell finished second for the Wildcats with her time of 29.92. Murphy finished fourth and freshman Allison Miller was fifth.
Diving – Freshman Maura Green finished second for Oxford with 126.20 points. Sophomore Elise Ormiston was third.
100 Butterfly – Kornburger finished first and set a school record with her time of 59.02. FitzCrane was second and Kurk was fifth for Oxford.
100 Freestyle – Curtis finished first with her time of 57.67. delaPaz and Patrell finished third and fourth respectively.
500 Freestyle – Skelton finished fourth with her personal best time of 6:40.49, while sophomore Kaitlyn Barber finished fifth for Oxford.
200 Freestyle Relay – Oxford’s A relay of Curtis, delaPaz, Patrell and Kornburger set a school record with their first place time of 1:46.95. Oxford’s B relay of Murphy, Kurk, Wilkins and FitzCrane was third for the Wildcats.
100 Backstroke – Wroblewski finished second for the Wildcats with her time of 1:15.62. Miller and freshman Abbie Fredericks finished fourth and fifth respectively.
100 Breaststroke – Wilkins finished second with a time of 1:20.98, while sophomore Maryann Stockard was fifth.
400 Freestyle Relay – Oxford’s A relay of Curtis, delaPaz, Patrell and Kornburger finished first with a time of 3:54.64, while the B relay of Murphy, Wroblewski, Miller and FitzCrane was third.
According to Rank, Kornburger has made the cut in seven of eight individual events, and is part of the one relay team that qualified for states.
‘I believe that before the end of the season, the 200 Freestyle relay of Curtis, delaPaz, Patrell and Kornburger has a good shot at making the state cut,? Rank added.
Up next for the girls is a meet at Rochester High School on Thursday, Oct. 13.
