25 years ago – 1997
Pappas announces 1998 will be his last: After wearing three hats for two years, city manager Art Pappas said he would be hanging up all of them.. During Monday’s Clarkston City Council meeting, Pappas said he intended to retire at the end of 1998 and the council should start taking steps towards finding a replacement and expanding city hall.
Brownies plant “Friendship Tree”: Brownie Troop 486 of the Fair Winds Council gathered on a cool, windy afternoon on Nov. 6 to plant a tree at Springfield Plains Elementary. The tree was purchased with funds donated to the council by the Detroit Edison Foundation.

50 years ago – 1972
Clarkston to get first hand coverage of moon shot: When Apollo 17 Moon rocket lifted off Pad A at Cape Kennedy’s Launch Complex 39, Bob Hemming was there representing Clarkston. He was assigned to cover the event for The Clarkston News and was among several thousand newspaper, radio and television reporters as the press site. Hemming said he hoped to give local readers a feeling of actually being present at the launch.
Around the township: The Charles Robertsons on Hummingbird hosted an Election Night open house for friends and neighbors. Red, white and blue decorations and a lovely buffet set the mood for a gala celebration.

75 years ago – 1947
Clarkston locals: John Shaughnessy left on Wednesday for Florida. He took his mother-in-law, Mrs. Emma Barnes to Tampa where she planned to stay for the next several months.
The Hilltopper: The first grade students started to do work with numbers. They learned to write by using figures and others with words. They had also been drawing pictures portraying things of interest they had done. One of the main items of interest was the snow over the weekend.
