Akapolco Tan Too is a new tanning salon adding a little more to their customers’ day than a tan.
Owners Kim and Al Moyski want the experience to be personable and each customer is known by name, not as a number in the computer. Each tanning room has pillows, cotton towels, protective eye wear, and candy treats left on the pillow.
“We try to make sure they have a little bit of sunshine,? said Kim. ‘When they come out, they are smiling.?
Akapolco Tan started in White Lake and expanded to the Clarkston area in October.
“Clarkston is new to us,? said Kim. ‘We haven’t heard anything but good things. They do so much here, it’s neat. Everyone has been so nice and welcoming.?
Akapolco Tan Too has a spa-like atmosphere and provides a relaxation room, massage therapy by a certified massage therapist Bonnie Dodd, and they share space with Oynx Salon & Spa.
“Everyone’s time is so precious,? said Kim. ‘This is a one-stop salon.”
For tanning, they have three beds, one stand-up, and personal airbrushing for those who don’t want to go in the sun. Many clients come in for airbrushing for special occasions such as weddings, vacations or baby showers. Chemicals are sugar-based and safe for pregnant women.
“Either you are young or older, male or female. We get every age group. I think it’s because we make everyone feel comfortable,? said Kim.
The staff will set up a package personally designed for each customer. They suggest how many minutes to tan per visit and how many visits the customer needs for the color they want. They also will suggest which moisturizers to use to maximize the length of time with the tan.
“We do it for a reason. We want them to see results,? said Kim. ‘They may not be overnight, but that’s not how it works. We will be the first ones to say that. We are honest about what we sell and what we are doing. Almost everyone has said I appreciate it and appreciate that you care.?
The Akapolco staff is trained and certified with the products they carry. New products came out in October and the staff is still testing them. They know their tanning beds inside and out, making sure they are clean with fresh bulbs.
One month unlimited service is $25. Another option is five visits, or go for a single visit. They have maintained the same prices since opening their White Lake location three years ago.
“We are very proud of that,? said Kim. ‘We have six kids. We know how hard it is to have money. We feel like if you pay for something and that should be it.?
Students and seniors receive a discount of $5 off.
They have a few specials during the holidays ? purchase a bottle of tanning lotion at regular price and receive two free tans. Some of the lotions they carry are by California Tan, Austrailian Gold and Designer Skin. They will make gift bags with lotion samples and a tanning package. Akapolco also offers gift certificates made out in any dollar amount the customer needs. Dodd has a special for new massage therapy customers. They will receive a massage for $50.
Every Saturday in December and January is Customer Appreciation Day. They have free samples, food and drink, and Dodd will be offering chair massages.
Next year, they will add henna tattoo and facial services to their location.

They are open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and closed on Sunday. Also, they will open as needed for their customers.
