Nathan Clark, senior at Clarkston High School, and Bailee Pfahl, senior at Our Lady of the Lakes High School in Waterford, were recently presented with Good Citizen awards by the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Sashabaw Plains Chapter.
The award is given to students from area high schools who possesses the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities.
The students participate by completing an application and writing an essay, with this year’s essay topic “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: How do the combined actions of so many good citizens keep our nation moving forward?”
“Winning this award proves I have been active in my community,” said Clark, also Clarkston’s National Honor Society president. “I’ve been active in politics in Oakland County, knocking on a lot of doors for many political campaigns.
“To receive recognition for that is something I am very grateful for.”
“I am very honored and thankful to have received the Good Citizen award,” Pfahl added.
“I hope that being one of the many recipients inspires others to be good to the people around them and contribute to the community. It feels nice to know that my opinions were valued and listened to. Receiving this award proved to me that there are always ways to have a positive impact on others, whether it is through our words or through our actions.”
Clark and Pfahl were presented with certificates and a monetary reward for winning the contest.
Clark plans to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in the fall and study political science and public policy.
Pfahl will be heading off to Michigan State University in East Lansing to study economics while participating in the Army ROTC program to commission as an officer when she graduates.
The Sashabaw Plains Chapter has presented the Good Citizen award to a high school senior at Clarkston Schools since 1958 and to Our Lady of the Lakes High School since 1986.
