Clarkston fans cheered and clapped enthusiastically as the Lady Wolves took their places on the mat at Lake Orion High School for the OAA Red No. 2 meet, Jan. 14.
The Clarkston Varsity Competitive Cheer team finished in fifth place and maintained their top ten place in the state for highest average score in Division 1 with 746.4467.
“It is so exciting,” said Beth Ann Markey, head coach.”This is definitely new territory for Clarkston Cheer, and I’m thrilled about it. The night was super special, too, because we got to honor our ten seniors.”?
The Lady Wolves took first place at the Novi Invitational out of the six teams competing in Division 1, Jan. 10.
“Novi was a fun day because we had our JV and our middle school teams with us competing,” Markey said. “It is so fun to pack the stands with Clarkston fans and have a lot of noise for our school. Each team did an amazing job, performing our best yet.”
The girls scored a total of 755.48 points to win over Waterford Mott, Plymouth, Novi, Lakeland and Grosse Pointe South. ?
“It was also cool to win in a place we’ll hopefully be there again,” Markey said, adding Novi is the location of the MHSAA Regional competition.
“The team this year has been like no other I have coached.” Markey added.?”Their drive to improve and put their best out on the mat is so amazing. They are intense and competitive one moment, but then will have fun and joke with each other the next. Most of these kids I’ve coached for three years so it has been such a proud experience to watch them improve, perform at such a high level, and earn respect among other competitive cheer teams.”
She added they worked hard through holiday break and each week they evaluate scores and consider judges’ feedback to adjust their material to make it the best it can be.
“These 20 juniors and seniors are definitely up for the challenge,” Markey said.
The Lady Wolves head to the Rochester Rumble at Rochester High School this Saturday.
