Brandon School Board to discuss how to spend $600K

Brandon Twp.- The school board will discuss how to spend about $600,000 left over from the $73.4 million bond voters approved five years ago, during their next meeting, planned for 6:30 p.m., March 14, at the central district office, 1025 S. Ortonville Road.
The board recently received their final audit of the bond voters approved in 2006 for several major renovations, technology upgrades, and construction of a new elementary school and activities complex.
Superintendent Lorrie McMahon said about $1.7 million of the bond is still unspent; however, $1.1 million of that is targeted for technology and building improvements that will be completed this summer. McMahon said it is likely that the recommendations will likely be to spend the remaining $600,000 on additional technology, improvements to buildings and sites, maintenance improvements that will save money long-term, and purchasing more microscopes and computers.
‘The leftover money is savings realized,? she said. ‘You project things to cost more and when they don’t, you recoup the savings.?
McMahon noted that the athletic bleachers in the high school gymnasium also need repairs and a new motor, and funds also need to be set aside for continuing water issues in the district.
‘The whole area has problems with water,? she said. ‘The county tests the water regularly for arsenic, and if they have concerns, we follow their advice on how to fix it.?
