Lady Cagers are making their third consecutive trip to the MHSAA Regional playoffs this week.
They sealed the deal after claiming their third district championship from Oxford last Friday for a 36-17 win.
It is the second district championship the Davenport sisters, senior Erin and sophomore Erika, have fought for together.
‘I love it,? Erika smiled. ‘It’s a huge accomplishment especially with my sister. It’s good – both of the years I have played we have won districts.?
‘I was real happy with how we played defense,? said Clarkston Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Tim Wasilk. ‘We were solid defensively. In the second half we started getting some shots and making a little run and press a little bit. They took care of the basketball.?
‘We did play good defense,? Erin added. ‘Erika nailed it today with good blocks.?
The Lady Wolves went on a 7-point run in the first quarter to get the lead before Oxford scored again with less than two minutes left. The Lady Wildcats scored four points before the quarter closed to put the score, 8-5.
Both teams opened the next quarter with shots to add to the board but they fell. Jessica Murphy from Oxford was the first to score on a basket then score two points from the line to put the Cats ahead, 9-8.
The Davenport sisters brought the Wolves back up beginning with a shot made from Erika from under the basket. Erin added to the score 30 seconds later off a pass from senior Delaney Kenny. They ended the first half with a 16-11 lead with five points from Erika and four from Erin.
Erika admitted she did have a few shots which missed their mark in the first half but she pushed past it.
‘I knew I had to keep my head up and they would start falling,? she said, adding her teammates helped to pick her up and keep her motivated.
Kenny and Erin led the team, both with 11 points. Kenny scored a 3-pointer in the game. Erika scored 10 points during the game.
‘Oxford had heck of a year,? said Wasilk. ‘They are well-coached and we knew they had players that could shoot the ball.?
Clarkston beat Lake Orion in the district semi-finals on Feb. 27, 50-16.
They dominated from the beginning of the game starting with a 16-point run started by Erika. The finished the first half with a 25-7 lead.
The Lady Wolves played Utica Ford in the first round of regional playoffs on Tuesday and won.
They move on to the finals on Thursday. The game is at Waterford Kettering, 2800 Kettering Drive, 7 p.m.
