Several Clarkston Wolves aided the Dragons United Water Polo team with making program history.
It started with a defeat over the Walled Lake Cobras 9-4 in the first round of the District Tournament, May 12.
The win clinched their first ever automatic bid to the regional tournament. Clarkston junior Adam Ehrenberger made ten saves in the net.
Lake Orion’s Dane Herrick led the offensive attack with six goals.
The Dragons played the number one seed in the next round of the tournament on Friday and lost to Birmingham Groves, 15-3.
The Dragons were back in the pool a few hours later, taking on higher seeded Birmingham Seaholm in a game.
The Dragons jumped out early with a two- goal lead and had the opposing coach calling for a timeout within the first two minutes of the game.
The momentum stayed with the Dragons and they never looked back as the stands filled and all the teams in attendance joined the Dragon families in cheering.
The Dragons responded to the enthusiastic crowd and Herrick scored three goals. Clarkston senior Owen Brown had two goals and Clarkston junior Canyon Roodbeen had one goal. Ehrenberger blocked eight shots and a penalty shot.
During the season, Birmingham Seaholm was ranked in the top ten in the state and they used every move possible to stop the Dragons from advancing, but were stopped at each attempt.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Dragons were met with a standing ovation and a 12-3 win over Seaholm.
The Dragons made history, finishing third in the district tournament, also the highest seed ever achieved by a Dragon water polo team.
The team plays in the regional tournament against Dexter High School, ranked fourth in the state on Wednesday.
The Dragons team caught attention of the Michigan Water Polo Association this week in their ranking. They are “On The Line” and considered 12th in the state.
