Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep athletes and fans thought the boys lacrosse game was a lock on April 19 as they went into half-time leading 10-2.
The Wolves proved them wrong and scored 12 goals in the last half of the game to win 14-12.
“It is the first time we came back from that kind of deficiency and won,” said Clarkston Boys Varsity Lacrosse Coach Brian Kaminskas.
“We went into halftime and talked about the things we are supposed to do. We have to give a lot of credit to our three key guys, our starting middies, Alex Dziewit, Kevin Horton and Joe Sharkey. I told them ‘for the next 24 minutes you are not coming off of the field. Hit the spark, burn the fire and we will ride your back. Go out there and make something happen’ and they did.”
Dziewit scored all of his five goals in the second half and had two assists. Jordan Kincaid scored two goals during the game. Sam Moore contributed with two assists.
“The boys realized they have a good team on their hands and they can be successful,” said Kaminskas.
The boys followed it up with another win on April 21 against Farmington, 14-3.
The boys were up 2-0 at the half and again finished big in the last half of the game.
Horton led with three goals and teammates Reid Kaminski, Sam Moore and Jordan Henney each added two goals.
Nathan Gill and Kincaid had two assists.
Kaminskas added they were three starters down because they were beat and hurt and needed the rest.
“We called on guys that don’t get a lot of time and experience and they did a great job,” he said. “We have great depth. Reid Kaminski had a pretty nice game. Jordan Henney stepped up for us and Ian Ericksen really started to emerge.”
Goalie Matt Goebel made four saves in the net for the night.
The boys head into another big week with an 5-1 overall record.
“It will be interesting,” Kaminskas said about this week against Rochester Adams, Stoney Creek and Utica Eisenhower. “This week is like our midterm exam. We have done some really nice things these last six games.”
He added opponents will be geared up and ready to come at them and the Wolves should be ready to go.
The boys played Rochester Adams at home on Tuesday. They head to Stoney Creek on Thursday, JV begins at 5:30 p.m. and varsity follows.
They play at Utica Eisenhower on Saturday with JV playing at noon, varsity follows.
