Economic woes may lock-out lock-in seniors

Brandon Twp.-For the past six years, the senior class at Brandon High School has sponsored a lock-in to discourage reveling graduates from drinking and driving upon the completion of their final year.
The all-night affair, which requires private fundraising of about $6,000-$9,000, and incorporates a variety of dusk-to-dawn activities, typically attracts about 75 percent of the seniors, said Cindy Livingstone, BHS lock-in coodinator.
However, the future of the all-night bash may now be in jeopardy as local area businesses, the greatest contributors to the lock-in, just don’t have the cash.
‘We sent about 100 fliers out asking for donations’we received about one-fourth of them back, almost everyone’s answer this year was ‘no.? I think it is because of the economy,? said Livingstone.
‘Currently, the school is short about $3,000, due to lack of donations.?
The lock-in is set for May 22, which is also the seniors? last day in Brandon High School.
The cost is $25 per student, and this year’s theme is ‘Surfing into paradise.? Goodie bags will be distributed on arrival and include a t-shirt, sandals, and other prizes related to the theme ‘paradise.?
‘Without the donations, the lock-in will be less elaborate than in years before,? Livingstone said.
She added the 2008 Class is rather large, compared to other classes, with about 277 students.
The most recent fundraiser at Red Knapps Resturant in Oxford netted only about $123; a second fundraiser is set from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., April 3 at Bullfrogs, 2225 Ortonville Road.
