Fire dept. to host Open House Oct. 6

Growing up to become a firefighter is a dream for many little boys and girls.
The Oxford Fire Department is offering them a chance to live out that dream ? at least for a few hours ? with its annual Open House on Sunday, Oct. 6.
The event will run from 12-4 p.m. at Fire Station #1 (96 N. Washington St.) in downtown Oxford.
Kids will get the opportunity to sit inside real fire engines and ambulances, spray water out of a genuine fire hose, learn how to use a fire extinguisher and meet the firefighters who protect them.
They’ll also learn lifesaving tips inside a fire safety trailer that fills with fake smoke and get an up-close view of a medical helicopter, which is expected to land behind the station between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Plenty of little plastic fire hats will be handed out as well as sticker badges.
Free hot dogs, cookies and soft drinks will be available to visitors.
