Getting a jump on the competition

Both track teams are in the midst of preparing for the MHSAA Regionals this week.
As preparation the boys took on league foes at their league meet on Friday and took fifth place.
‘We beat a team in our league which is good especially for our young guys,? said Boys Track Coach John Bennink.
For the regionals he sees quite a few of the boys standing out – long-jumper Brian Benway, high-jumper Jordan Garrison, hurdler Travis Smith, distance runner Adam Bruderick and two relay teams. Benway took second at the meet in the long jump.
‘Brian has been real consistent,? said Bennink. ‘He is getting out ther and getting good jumps. He seems to be preparing more.?
The 800-meter relay team of Christian Bonzheim, Spenser Pawlik, Branton Dennis and Adam Bruderick took third place.
Bruderick took second in his 800-meter run against one of the better runners in the state.
‘If he can run 1:58 or 1:57, he has a real good chance to qualify for states,? said Bennink.
Garrison took third on the high jump.
‘He is one of our few contributing seniors point-wise. He did a great job this year,? added Bennink.
Smith took second in the 300-meter hurdles.
‘It’s a good accomplishment for a young man and he is going to keep getting better,? said Bennink.
The boys face tough competition on Friday from Holly and Lake Orion.
‘We are excited about Friday and think we can finish well,? Bennick commented. ‘I am realistic. I am excited to watch our guys perform and see how they compete.”
The meet is at Brandon High School and begins at 1:30 p.m., the running event finals are set for 4:15 p.m.
