Grapplers top Macomb teams

The Wolves went 4-1 at the Oakland-Macomb tournament last Saturday and Bret Foltz (130) helped out as he went undefeated.
“We wrestled well,” said Clarkston Varsity Wrestling Coach Derek Moscovic. “We beat Macomb Dakota, Romeo, Warren Lincold and Anchor Bay – they are all good teams.”
They beat Macomb Dakota, 34-33, with pins from Foltz, Nate Vandermeer (140), Chris Trimmer (285) and Greg Miller (112). Winning by decision over their opponents were Connor Ryan (125), 10-4; Jake Dionne (135), 12-2; and Cameron Wilkie (119), 6-1.
For the second round they beat Anchor Bay, 33-27, with pins from Nathan Troutvine (215) and Trimmer. Also, with wins were Stevan Franco (171), 5-3; Tyler Slating (145), 4-1; Foltz, 4-2; Vandermeer, 23-6; Miller, 11-9; and Wilkie, 9-1.
The Wolves went on to beat Romeo in the third round, 51-21. Nolan Eriksen (152), Slating and Wilkie won with pins while Kas Waitkus (160) and Ryan won their matches in major decision. Franco, Troutvine, Miller and Foltz won by voids.
It was during round four Clarkston lost their lone match to Richmond, 52-11. Dionne earned points on a pin as Ryan, 10-6, and Foltz, 4-2, won their matches with decisions.
“They are a really tough team,” said Moscovic.
The boys won their last round against Warren Lincoln, 39-31. Miller and Wilkie won their matches with pins. With decisions Ryan, 5-0; Foltz, 9-6; and Dionne, 6-3. Scott Shelton (189); Franco, and Troutvine won with voids.
“The guys are coming along,” Moscovic added. “Bret and Cameron wrestled well. Other guys like Greg, Connor and Nolan had good weekends.”
The Wolves split during their dual meet last Wednesday against Oxford and Avondale.
They beat Avondale, 71-0 with pins from Dionne, Slating, Miller, Franco and Wilkie. Vandermeer won his match, 3-0; while Foltz won by major decision, 15-0; and Nevin Strayer (189) won 8-2.
Nate Hayes (160), Eriksen, Troutvine, Trimmer and Ryan won their rounds with voids.
The Wolves lost to Oxford, 42-27.
Points against Oxford came from pins by Dionne, Slating, Ryan and Wilkie. Foltz won by decision, 6-2.
Foltz, 6-2; Dionne, with a pin, :29; Slating, with a pin at 3:57; Ryan, with a pin, 2:38; Wilkie, with a pin, 2:33.
The boys host Carman Ainsworth on Wednesday for their last match for the regular season, 5:30 p.m.
“They have a good team,” Moscovic added. “I don’t know individually where they are tough at but they always have tough kids. They will come in and give us everything we can handle.”
They head to Oxford on Friday for the OAA tournament.
“We will have to be ready to wrestle,” Moscovic said, adding if they win the tournament they could share the OAA Red league title with Oxford as Clarkston is currently in second place and the Wildcats hold first place. “If we wrestle well we can win it. Everyone will have to wrestle well. We have to compete as a team if we do it will be a fun thing for our team. If we all show up it will be a good tournament.”
