In the special election May 3 to fill the late Andrea Schroeder’s seat in the Michigan House of Representatives, Mike Harris defeated Kent Douglas, garnering 7,583 votes to Douglas’ 5,799 votes.
The seat had been vacant since October 1, 2021, when Schroeder passed away at the age of 57 after battling stomach cancer.
After the win was official, Harris was quick to thank the voters.
“I am deeply moved by the expression of confidence from all four communities in the 43rd District, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Harris said. “I am immensely grateful to the family, friends, and loyal supporters who so generously contributed their time and effort to our campaign during this election session.
“From today, I take on these new responsibilities knowing that I stand on the sturdy shoulders of dedicated citizens. I am passionate about serving others. I will look forward to working for you as your state representative to restore legitimate government and prosperity and to make it once again a place where people of all ages can count on a future.”
Harris’ term expires at the end of the year, but he plans on making the most of his time in Lansing.
“My immediate focus is to help with constituent issues that have come about since the passing of our former representative, Andrea Schroeder,” said Harris. “I will tackle current legislation and receive my committee assignments for the remainder of this term. My goal is to draft legislation that will benefit our local economy, schools, first responders here and across the state.”
The 43rd District includes Clarkston, Lake Angelus, Independence Township, and part of Waterford Township.
