Hawkins erupts for five goals in Martians? win

The Goodrich hockey team, buoyed by a sensational game from sophomore forward Max Hawkins, routed host Clio 8-1 in a Dec. 8 contest.
Hawkins scored five of the Martians? eight goals on their way to the win. Goodrich outshot Clio 49-4 in the game.
Clio actually scored the game’s first goal at 42 seconds of the first, but from there, it was all Martians. Goodrich’s Matt Hill tied things up at 6:33 of the first on assists from Hawkins and Scott Hollingsworth.
Hawkins attained a natural hat trick in the second period, scoring three straight goals: at 2:05 on assists from Hill and Sean Brigham; at 5:59 on an assist from Hill; and at 9:01 on an assist from Brian Van Kuren. Van Kuren wrapped up the scoring in the second on assists from Hill and Phil Holloway.
In the third, Hawkins scored his other two goals of the game at 2:50 (on an assist from Steve Locke) and 12:40 (on assists from Van Kuren and Hill). Holloway finished off the scoring at 14:14 on assists from Derek Powers and Reece Geml.
The Martians, powered by a hat trick from Hill, easily defeated visiting Madison Heights Lamphere 7-2 Dec. 5.
The Martians asserted their dominance early, scoring three goals in the first period. Senior forward Lance Keene scored on assists from senior forward Ryan Mortimer with 2:42 left in the first. Hill followed with an unassisted goal with 1:54 remaining, then Keene scored another unassisted goal with 1:06 left.
Goodrich added to their lead with two goals in the first half of the second period. Senior forward Danny Daugherty scored a power play goal on an assist from Keene with 10:59 left in the second, then Hill tallied another unassisted goal with 8:49 remaining to put the Martians up 5-0.
Lamphere scored its first goal of the game with 2:42 left in the second, as forward Sean Muldoon scored on an assist from Nico Kunert. However, Hill completed his hat trick with 1:01 left in the period, lighting the lamp on an assist from Hawkins and giving the Martians a 6-1 lead at the end of the period.
In the third, Kunert scored the other Lamphere goal on assists from Sean Dutton and Danen Goodfellow with 4:50 left. However, Goodrich countered 39 seconds later, as Mortimer connected on assists from Daugherty and Keene.
Goodrich sophomore goalie Brad Smith, who played the first and second periods, stopped 21-of-22 shots (95.4 percent), while senior goalie Steve Jedlowski played the third period and stopped 9-of-10 shots (90 percent). Lamphere netminder Mike Deacon made 19-of-26 saves (73.1 percent).
The Martians return to action Dec. 17 when they take on Mt. Morris.
