High schoolers help Haiti, community

Clarkston High School students walked around the hallways on Friday wearing something usually not allowed – hats.
It was a special day, for the low cost of $1 students, teachers and staff members could wear a hat. All the money was collected and is going to help Haiti survivors after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake on Jan. 12.
‘It’s not just the kids, but the families and the PTSA got involved,? said Aaron Dobson, LEAD Program Advisor and high school teacher. ‘The teachers donated as well. It was a collective effort.?
The students counted the money and they had raised $1,085 and Hollywood Market was going to double the total and make it $2,170.
‘We called Hollywood Market and they will match your donations to the Red Cross? Haiti relief fund,? said sophomore Josh Pokrefky.
The week was also Wolf Pack Week, presented by the sophomore LEAD class. During the week the students participated in a spirit week with a twist, every day as the students dressed up in themed clothes they were also helping the community.
They decorated the school with posters to advertise the themes presented during the week and to get the school fired up with spirit.
Kelsey Smith explained the week started with Tie Dye Tuesday and the theme was for going green and recycling.
The students collected bottles and cans and money to go to the school’s recycling program to go towards getting their paper recycling bin back.Another way they went green was by going paperless for one day.
The next day was Workout Wednesday and the focus was on healthy lifestyles. They also brought awareness to the athletic department and raising money for the weight room.
On Thrifty Thursday, the students wore bargain clothes. The class collected clothes on Thursday and Friday to go to a local clothing closest that helps people in the community. By lunchtime on Friday they had a room full of clothes ready to be sorted and donated.
The class had everyone in the school write down their names on a piece of yellow paper, 1×1 inch big. They combined all of the pieces in a display case and spelled out ‘CHS.?
‘We put a bunch of pictures on the side of it,? said Taylor Rogers. ‘The whole week was aimed at getting the whole school together as one.?
‘It turned out really good,? said Pokrefky.
The class had fun and realized they had a big impact on not only the community, but the world.
‘We didn’t know we could do that much,? said Rogers. ‘Spirit week is usually local and within the school.?
Every sophomore leadership class has to do a school project and this class topped them all.
‘It is the most ambitious undertaking of a sophomore class. They did extremely well,? said Dobson. ‘They really showed they are a good solid team. They impacted the school in a positive way.?
The class has to reach out in a positive way while getting everyone involved.
‘This is symbolic of it but also is the process of them learning how to do the projects,? said Dobson. ‘The class is a mix of different kinds of kids and that is what we are all about and them connecting all the people in their school.?
