Lady Hitters had a winning week as they faced a league foe and played in a tournament on Saturday.
They began the week splitting a double header against OAA Red foe Troy as they lost the first game, 9-6. The Lady Wolves were behind in the seventh inning until they scored four runs to close the gap.
“I really liked the way they battled,” said Clarkston Girls Varsity Softball Head Coach Don Peters. “We were hitting the snot out of the ball. We got behind in both games and came back from behind in both – just one comeback was better than the other.”
The comeback came in the second game as the girls won the next game, 6-5.
Maddy Scarsella hit a double both times she was at bat and had three RBIs.
“She had some unbelievable defensively plays,” Peters added. “She had a potential tying run at the bottom of the seventh. She made a phenomenal catch in the seventh inning to get the first out.”
From the game he noticed a few strengths and a few tweaks the girls need to work on.
“Defense needs to get a little tuned up but we haven’t been outside that much,” he noted. “We haven’t been able to get outside. The same with the pitchers they haven’t been on the dirt. Our offense is really gelling.”
The Lady Wolves went 2-1 in the Under the Lights Classic in Muskegon on Saturday.
“We hit the snot out of the ball out there, too,” Peters said. “They are doing a really good job with their base running. They are aggressive and smart. They seem to be finding character in being scrappers and working hard. Even when they are behind they get right back into it.”
They beat Reeth-Puffers in four innings. They opened the first inning with seven runs and then scored a combination of seven more in the third and fourth innings.
Abby Skvarce had a double and hit 2-for-3, bringing in two runs during the game. Mariah Hood and Brooklyn Williams also had two RBIs for the game. Rachel Alli hit 2-for-2 and had one RBI.
Candace Kitchen was the winning pitcher in three innings with four strikeouts.
The girls lost to Saline, 9-4. Saline scored four runs in the first inning as the Lady Wolves scored one. Clarkston scored on two runs in the third inning but Saline held onto the lead with five points in the sixth inning.
Rachel Vieira led the team as she had three RBIs and hit 2-for-4. Kitchen went 3-for-4 at the bat with one RBI. Kitchen pitched five innings and had four strikeouts.
The Lady Wolves held their third annual Girls in Pink Classic, April 12 as they went 2-1. They beat Swartz Creek, 9-2, and Fenton, 18-6.
The wins and losses for the week puts the girls at 7-3 and 1-1 OAA Red as they host North Farmington on Wednesday for a double header.
“We get used to battling,” Peters added. “The thing is you have to play every second of the game in all seven innings and stay focused whatever the score is. They are doing it.”
The Lady Wolves host their annual Michigan Stars tournament this weekend, which is also their fundraiser.
“We play a lot of great teams,” Peters said.
The tournament is held at Bicentennial Park in Grand Blanc.
