Junior Erika Davenport and senior Kacy Robinson each put three points on the board with less than two minutes left in the third quarter as the Lady Wolves hosted Stoney Creek last Friday.
For Davenport it was a basket and one-point from the free throw line to put the score 22-23. For Robinson it was a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in the quarter to put the girls in the lead, 25-23.
‘The three at the end of the third quarter was good momentum into the fourth quarter,? said Tim Wasilk, head coach for the Clarkston Girls Varsity Basketball team.
It was just what they needed to gain the lead over Stoney Creek for the second time.
They continued the spark in the fourth quarter starting with a basket from Davenport with a another from Kayla Russell off Robinson’s rebound.
A foul against Clarkston gave Stoney Creek the opportunity to close the gap by two points. Taylor Mullins made up for it seven seconds later, scoring on a layup.
They finished with the last three points from Robinson from the free throw line, putting the score 41-31.
‘It was a good win for us,? Wasilk added. ‘Stoney Creek played heck of a game. They are well-coached and knocked down some threes.?
The Lady Wolves opened the game with a 3-point attempt from senior Carly Giroux, but it missed it’s mark. Lady Cougar Natalie Voss put Stoney Creek on the board with her following field goal attempt making it – the first of four for Stoney Creek.
‘It was tough contesting those threes,? said Wasilk. ‘It is something we have to adjust and do a better job defending. If they would have knocked down more threes it would have been a different game.?
He added the Lady Wolves struggled offensively in the first half, especially after Davenport got into foul trouble.
‘We had to pull her out early in the second quarter,? he said. ‘Our team did a really good job of playing and making up for our presence inside. In the second half I thought we really stepped up our intensity with our press. We got some traps and got the ball moving. It helped us offensively to pick up the pace of the game.?
Davenport led with 18 points and Robinson scored 15 points, with two 3-pointers.
‘Kacy had a heck of a game,? said Wasilk. ‘She had a lot of composure. She drove the ball to the basket really well. She had some big jumpers. I was really happy with her effort.?
The Lady Wolves (5-1) head to North Farmington on Friday, 32900 W, 13 Mile Road.
They host Carman-Ainsworth on Tuesday with JV beginning at 5:30 p.m., varsity following.
‘We just need more work offensively to clean things up,? Wasilk said going into this week. ‘We have some young kids. They have to just continue to gain the experience.?
