Letter to the Editor: Responding to recent viewpoint

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the letter to the editor from the Feb. 2, 2022 edition of The Clarkston News entitled “U.S. is affirmatively misguided.”
I sincerely hope that Mr. Fetzer’s opinion is not widely reflected in our community.
Appointing a black woman is not affirmative action. It is making the court more accurately reflect the America of today.
I wonder if Mr. Fetzer opposed Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman appointment. In 1980, Ronald Reagan made a campaign promise to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court and he fulfilled that promise on August 19, 1981. There is no difference in appointing a qualified women in 1981 and appointing a qualified black woman in 2022.
There may be problems with affirmative action but appointing a Supreme Court justice is not one of them.
If we could change the world for one day, I wonder how Mr. Fetzer would feel if the Supreme Court was filled with all minority justices with the exception of one white woman. Would he want the president to appointment a qualified white male to fill the vacant seat?

Sincerely,
Nancy Rodda
