Local land conservancy celebrates 50 years

The Clarkston-based North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy is 50 years old this year – a milestone worthy of a celebration.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to those early conservationists who identified the value of the headwaters in Northern Oakland County,” said NOHLC Executive Director Susan Julian.
The organization’s mission is simple: to protect the land, water and wildlife in the headwaters region of the Clinton, Shiawassee, Huron and Flint rivers.
To date, the conservancy has protected 1,530 acres of woods, prairies, wetlands, and rivers.
The conservancy recently announced plans to expand their coverage area.
“All the streams and lakes that we love are connected beyond Oakland County, eventually affecting the Great Lakes,” Julian said. “For our second 50 years, we’re going to enlarge the headwaters area we work in.”
With that expansion comes a new name: the Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy.
“The great blue heron has always been a symbol for our organization,” said NOHLC board member Lora Perkins. “Our new name reflects both the past and the future.”
