Pink slips for 20 teachers

Twenty Clarkston teachers and support staff will receive pink slips this year, thanks to the Board of Education’s 7-0 vote, Monday night.
Superintendent Dr. Rod Rock apologized.
“They work hard for us and our children,” he said.
District staff reductions were based on budget cuts approved April 11, expected reduction in enrollment, and anticipated reduction of grants, he said.
The board required administration to cut $6 million from the 2011-2012 budget ? $3 million was cut by changing health insurances for teachers and support staff. The staff cuts approved on Monday lops $893,985 from the budget, leaving $2.1 million to go.
The rest will be decided closer to the end of June, when the school board must approve next year’s budget.
“As we move forward the next couple of months, we will be putting in actual numbers as opposed to unknown numbers,” said Rock, adding the financial support from the state is still unknown but the administration will work with various scenarios.
