Scam surrounding meters

According to Independence Township officials, there’s a troubling email scam circulating.
Residents are receiving fraudulent emails stating that mechanical meters must be replaced with smart digital meters with a security deposit being required. If a resident were to call the number provided, the call is answered “Independence Township” masquerading as an employee.
However, the email is not affiliated with Independence Township. The email is soliciting payment via prepaid cards such as Green Dot, AmexGift, Apple Pay, etc. of which the township does not accept these types of payments.
