Volunteering for Girl Scouts nets local recognition

The month of April was National Volunteer Month and in the southeast Michigan, volunteers used their talents, experience and love of youth to uplift girls and develop them into leaders.
Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan recently honored nearly 100 volunteers across the region for their commitment to the Girl Scout program. Among the dozens of women, men and organizations is Kelsey Wargo, a Clarkston resident who received the Volunteer of Excellence Award, a national award from Girl Scouts of the USA.
“Our volunteers are what holds this organization together and we’re so grateful to be able to honor them,” Wargo said. “Without our volunteers, we don’t know what Girl Scouts would be. They dedicate so much of themselves to these girls and are incredibly special to the entire Girl Scout program.”
Wargo has kept her troop engaged by reaching out to community businesses such as the Clarkston Family Farm to provide programming for her troop.
The Volunteer of Excellence award recognizes those volunteers who have contributed outstanding service while partnering directly with girls in any pathway to implement the Girl Scout Leadership Experience through use of the National Program Portfolio, or who have contributed outstanding service in support of the council’s mission.
