Junior Ryne Jones took the pass from teammate Conor Bright and with a swift kick put it into Waterford Kettering’s net for the second time on Sept. 9.
Captain Jarrett Kersten added one more to end the night for the Wolves’ win, 3-0.
“We really stepped up and stuck with our game plan and moved the ball really well on the ground creating a lot of scoring opportunities,” said Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Chuck Lawhorn.
Both teams remained scoreless throughout the first half of the game.
“We came out a little flat in the first half,” admitted Lawhorn.
The Wolves did put pressure on Kettering putting 12 shots on goal and keeping Captains’ goalie Justin Haley on his feet.
“They felt the sense of urgency in the second half,” said Lawhorn. “We were really close to scoring and it made them realize we have to play hard against every single team or any team can beat you on any day if we don’t play well and we don’t play hard.”
Jones made his first goal early in the second half slipping the ball past Haley.
“Ryne played an excellent game,” said Lawhorn. “I had him on the outside. Anytime we had the ball at his feet he became a dangerous player and played really well.”
Clarkston finished with 20 shots on the net while goalie. Their defense kept Kettering from scoring.
Wolf goalies Tim Rogers had two saves and Trevor Smith made one save while he was in the net for the last ten minutes.
Clarkston lost to Rochester Adams on Sept. 7, 2-0, putting their overall record after last week to 4-3-1.
“We had a lot of scoring opportunities against Adams,” said Lawhorn. “The difference was we finished them on Thursday. I thought the way we moved the ball was much better for us and much more the style we need to play.”
The boys played Troy on Tuesday and host Lahser on Thursday
“They compete pretty hard,” said Lawhorn.
The Wolves also celebrate their annual Youth Soccer Night with a soccer shootout where all participants receive a free hot dog and they have a lot of other giveaways throughout the night.
“It gets everybody in the community excited about soccer,” added Lawhorn. “It’s great to see all the kids out there playing soccer. It makes me happy to see so many kids involved at that age. It shows them the right way to play.”
All kids wearing a soccer jersey are free on Thursday night.
JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
The boys head to Stoney Creek next Tuesday.
“They have a competitive team this year and it will be a great game,” said Lawhorn. “We are starting to gel more and play better. Everyone is getting on the same page. Hopefully by that point everybody will know where they are suppose to be and know their roles and we will be a machine.”
