Novi took the trophy for winning the annual Clarkston Christmas tournament on Saturday afternoon.
But it was the Wolves controlling the ice in the consolation round – scoring ten goals to Davison’s two goals in the first period.
Junior Brad Pizzey led the team scoring a hat trick during the game. His first came 4:16 into the game with an assist from Dillon Drayer and Macario Torres.
Junior Jordan Henney added another before Davison could get on the board.
The game was tied up going into the second period and the Wolves changed the tone during a power play. Austin Morse scored with help from Adam Johns and Connor Hughes, breaking the tie.
Morse and Drayer added two more goal securing the cushion for Clarkston by the time the period
The boys continued to take aim finishing with 53 shots on goal and five more goals by the time the buzzer ended the game. Torres, Adam Seel and Adam Bruderick added their own goals to Pizzey’s two in the last 17 minutes.
Alec Gildner made 15 saves during the game.
The boys lost to Hartland during the first round of their Christmas tournament on Friday night, 6-5.
“It was a disappointing loss,” said Coach Bryan Krygier.
Hartland took control of the game in the first period – scoring four goals on their six shots on the net.
Adam Matynowski put Clarkston on board after Hartland’s first goal and Pizzey scored with six minutes remaining in the period to put Clarkston in the lead.
Hartland’s Jordan Ruderbusch answered by tying the game, scoring his first goal 30 seconds later. Quick actions by Ruderbusch and Ryan Daavettila led to two more goals giving them the lead.
Larkin put one in the net before the period ended.
“We scored goals when we should have scored goals,” said Krygier. “We allowed them to get right back in the game and take it away from us.”
Hartland continued their reign scoring two more times in the second period.
Torres struck with 34 seconds left and added Clarkston’s fourth goal to the board.
The Wolves came out quick and struck their opponents net in the last period and keeping it in Hartland’s zone.
Zach Gootee skated around the net and stopped the pass from Morse. He reacted fast and took his shot, hitting it to the top of the net behind the goalie.
“We did well,” said Krygier, “but I told the guys at the beginning of the game this team scores goals in the first period and hangs on. It is exactly what they did. The guys didn’t listen. We allowed them to have soft and easy goals. They didn’t come and do the things we practiced and prepared for prior to the game. If teams don’t do it, they lose. We lost.”
He added the boys continue to practice all the right things but a few things are still missing from the game.
“You have to be prepared mentally for a game, you can’t go out there and think you are going to win,” Krygier said. “Heart and brains go a long way. If we have the heart, we are disciplined and we are smart – we should win a lot of games but tonight we weren’t.”
The Wolves made 55 shots on the net.
Goalie Troy Fasseel made two saves in the first period. Jack Viazanko had 14 saves for the remaining two periods.
The split week puts the boys at 5-4-1 overall.
Hartland lost 7-3 in their game against Novi.
Clarkston returns after holiday break on Jan. 12, when they head to St. Clair Shore
