Connor Dziewit swung the ball to teammate Andrew Williamson as the seconds counted down in the overtime period against St. Michael’s College School on Sunday.
Williamson shot it into the net with 2:38 remaining to win the game for the Wolves against the Toronto team, 12-11.
‘He was in the right place at the right time,? said Brian Kaminskas, head coach for the Clarkston Boys Varsity Lacrosse team. ‘He is an opportunist attackman and he knows how to find those open slots. He got there, got the ball and he knew how to bury it.?
The Wolves started off slow against St. Michael’s and found themselves behind. They eased their way up and tied with the visiting team.
‘The guys took a little time to wake up but once they did they settled in,? Kaminskas said. ‘We were behind then it was goal for goal all the way.?
Connor Ward, Reid Kaminski and Williamson led with three goals each during the game. Keaton Mitchell added two goals to the board while Dziewit had one goal and four assists.
The boys made 21 shots on the net while Jake Hendricks made ten saves for Clarkston.
‘St. Mike’s is ranked fifth in Canada,? Kaminskas added. ‘This is only their second loss of the year and we were happy to give it to them.?
He continued by adding it helps the boys as they prepare for tough teams and for the playoffs in a few weeks.
‘It gives us a little bit of credibility and a little more validation to what they are doing,? he said. ‘They work hard and they can compete with the top talent in two different countries.?
The Wolves defeated another Canadian team last week when they beat St. Andrew’s College on Friday, 18-11. Ward led the team with six goals. Kaminski added three. Austin Egler had two assists during the game. The boys made 18 shots on the net. In the goal, Hendricks turned away four shots and David Taylor stepped in to block three shots.
They opened the week with an 11-7 win over Birmingham Consolidated where Ward led wtih four goals. Dziewit and Kaminski added two goals each and Dziewit had four assists.
The Wolves were down by two points by the end of the first quarter. They kepted Birmingham scoreless in the third quarter for the win. They made 24 shots on the net and Hendricks had 11 saves including
The boys host Troy Athens on Thursday before going against Holland Christian on Saturday during the Clarkston Lacrosse Program’s annual Game for a Cure.
Kaminskas added the game against Holland Christian is a special one because their head coach is a Clarkston alumni, Steven Johns.
‘He coached a lot of these guys during the off season so there is a big history. It’s going to be fun,? he smiled
The boys are also excited for the event to help raise money for St. Joseph Cancer Research Center and the Ryan Kennedy Memorial Playground fund
‘It is one of the big things we do here,? Kaminskas said. ‘Last year we raised over $20,000 and we are on track to raise more this year.?
