The Prism Club at Clarkston High School had their first meeting on April 19, but it has been a long time in the making.
The club was started by senior Hannah Wilson, junior Daniel Ephlin, and sophomore Lorraine Walsh.
It was created to offer LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) students and their allies with a safe and friendly environment where they can talk about their problems, help come up with methods of dealing with discrimination, and just generally be themselves.
Ephlin said they had been “wanting to start the club for a long time” and that it finally took off this year.
Administration is one hundred percent supportive of the club and was important in bringing the Prism Club to life, he said.
Forming the club has been pretty smooth, but there have been struggles.
The biggest problem was “backlash from other students. There was a poster torn down and some other drama,” Ephlin said.
But many students have been very supportive, he said.
Their goal is to normalize the club and they hope it will become an “educational and informative safe space – a club for anyone and everyone,” Ephlin said.
“We are here to stay, we’re not going anywhere,” he said.
Prism Club is working to increase awareness and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community and they plan to take even more of an educational role next school year.
The club meets on Tuesdays after school in room A218.
