International water experts converged on Clarkston for A Vision for Clean Water conference and workshops, April 27-30 at Colombiere Center in Springfield Township.
They shared information and learned about the latest in filter technology for people without access to clean water in developing countries, said David Weatherill, international technical advisor with CAWST, Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology based in Canada.
“The goal is to create a sustainable situation, not just give them a filter and disappear – infrastructure using the materials available,” Weatherill said.
Participants travelled to town from Indiana, Washington, New York, Illinois, Canada, and other areas.
A Vision for Clean Water, a Troy-based nonprofit organization, also presented two programs to the public on water filtration projects in developing countries and drinking water quality testing, said Eileen Heasley, cofounder.
They presented information and learned about a variety of filters and rainwater harvesters for individual families as well as communities, made with ceramics, sand, and other materials.
Clarkston and Troy Rotary clubs also helped out with the conference.
“We work closely with Rotary to help developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Central America – there are millions without access to clean water, electricity, all different needs.”
