Independence Township Board voted unanimously, Jan. 22, to approve a contract with Springfield Township to exchange CDBG funds for senior center services.
Under the contract, Springfield Township provides $11,682 from its federal Community Development Block Grant to Independence Township. The money will fund access fees for Springfield Township seniors ages 62 and over to the Independence Township Senior Community Center.
The Independence Township senior center had 79 members 62-years-old and older from Springfield Township, as well as other Springfield residents who participate in programs and activities.
“They’ve been extremely supportive,” said Barbara Rollin, senior center director.
“I’m happy to see our two communities working together so closely since we’re so close to each other,” said Trustee Rachel Loughrin. “There’s no sense to duplicate these services in both communities so I think this is wonderful.”
Springfield Township Supervisor Collin Wall signed the contract on Jan. 7.
Springfield has contracted with Independence over the past several years to provide CDBG funds for their residents to access the ITPRS Senior Community Center, Rollin said.
The formula developed by CDBG includes facility operating expenses and employee wages provided by the Independence Township Senior Community Center, she said.
