The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office wants to bring attention to a scam of individuals offering various services such as driveway sealing or repair, home improvements, roof repairs or tree trimming at what appears to be an unusually low price.
Consider these safety tips:
• Be cautious when dealing with someone who offers a service you didn’t request.
• Always ask for ID before you open the door, especially if you are not familiar with the company or the person.
• Do not pay for tree-trimming work by individuals claiming to be from a utility contractor. Utility line clearance work is done free of charge.
• Do not pay for the entire job up front or with cash.
• Be wary of “today only” deals.
• Ask for references.
Call the sheriff at 248-858-5000 or your local police department if you believe the person at your door is a con artist.
