Letter to the Editor: We want Fisher

Dear Editor,

As past Independence Township treasurers, we are writing in support of Gerald A. (Jerry) Fisher for Independence Township supervisor.
Jerry was unanimously appointed by the Independence Township Board in October 2021 to fill the unexpired term of the previous supervisor who resigned less than a year after he was re-elected. Jerry is eminently more qualified than his opponents.
Jerry was township attorney for 25 years and during our time on the Township Board, he was instrumental in preparing our Land Use Master Plan and helped author many of the zoning ordinances which are still in use today. As township attorney, he was instrumental in a multitude of critical decisions that impact all of us today:
• Stopping the creation of a landfill on Allen Road and reversing in court another DNR approved landfill on Foster Road.
• Stopping a 487 acre gravel pit on Sashabaw Road
• Reversing in court a previously approved K-Mart on Dixie Highway at the north side of Waterford Hill
• Stopping in federal court the development of over a thousand apartments at the north end of Deer Lake.
• Stopping, as Special Counsel to the township, the proposed Walmart on Waldon Road
Jerry is dedicated.
After a full previous year of negotiations, in his short time as township supervisor, Jerry has finalized the contract with the Firefighters Union (IAFF) which has gained a rare unanimous approval from both the Fire Union and Township Board.
He is pursuing the revitalization of the Dixie Highway corridor and working on methods and funding sources for the repair of subdivision roads.
Jerry was unanimously appointed to a political position as a non-politician.
Our community deserves the best.
Three supervisors in two years does not make for the good government we deserve.
Instead, it makes sense to us, for the sake of continuity in government, to retain Supervisor Gerald Fisher and affirm the board’s unanimous appointment.

Sincerely,
Fred Ritter
