The phrase “no such thing as a free lunch” doesn’t apply to North Sashabaw Elementary School, at least during Souper Sundays.
Starting this past January, North Sashabaw second grade teacher Kristi Heilig began the Souper Sundays initiative where local families are offered a free soup meal and a fun activity at the school’s cafeteria and gym from 12-2 p.m. to “build community and strengthen families,” Heilig said.
“This is especially important in these winter months when budgets feel tighter and we’re stuck inside our homes,” she said. “Our interaction with our neighbors becomes limited and we can feel all alone – Souper Sundays is a venue for community.”
Panera Bread has also partnered with the school to provide fresh bread to accompany the soup, as well as for families to take home.
The first Souper Sunday was Jan. 13, which was free haircuts for kids. Family game day with physical education teacher Michael Keeler was next on Jan. 27, and Diversity Day was the theme on Feb. 10.
The most recent Souper Sunday was this past Sunday, Feb. 24, tabbed Musical Sunday with music teacher Brian Haverkate.
“The first Sunday attendance was great – about 50-75 people,” noted Heilig. “The next two weeks were less – one due to a snowstorm, and one with no explanation.”
Coming up in March will be Souper Sundays on March 10 and 24, featuring March is Reading Month. The two events April 14 and April 28 will be Health and Wellness themed with the Clarkston Medical Group.
“If this event is something that grows, showing need, we will consider continuing into next school year, but probably not during the summer,” added Heilig.
North Sashabaw Elementary School is located at 5290 Maybee Road.
